Our hope is through these small groups we are helping our participants return to “square one” by spending more time reflecting on biblical texts with one another. In these small groups we honor a sacred listening to the text, silence, journaling, and a conversation that stems from this reflective approach to time with the text. It is beautiful to experience the movement of the Holy Spirit as we gather around the text. Though you will certainly learn something about the text, we want to provide space for experiencing the text less as information and more for formation. What Peterson was diagnosing in 2011 is no different than in 2026- people don’t know it, or at least not well enough. Not the one we have dreamed up or narrowed to one particular text or even a good movie clip, but who is the young boy shepherd to bewildered king of Israel who lived a real life attempting to be faithful to the God who called him? Given the amount of material we have from and about David in Scripture we have the chance to sit with a large scope of his life. Though we are not being called to lead God’s people in the same context as David, we are attempting to respond to God’s call upon our own lives. What do we tell others when they ask? God responds to Moses with a pretty vague response- “I Am who I Am.” Though we often draw from looking backwards to tell us who God has been to God’s people in the past, whenever we get a response or statement about who God is in Scripture it is in present tense. How encouraging that God meets us actively in the present moment. God is the God who is here right now. How might these texts encourage us to consider how God is with us right here and right now? When Jesus says, “I am the bread of life,” or “I am the alpha and the omega,” what kind of encouragement are we noticing? It doesn’t seem that clear at first, or as clear as we want it to be, but sitting with these texts a little longer can reveal something deeply encouraging.
