But how might reading the Bible together with other colleagues who are in ministry settings help enrich your lens, and maybe, how you teach and preach about this text? Like most things at Peterson House, this is simple and all you need to do is sign up and show up. We will gather together in a group of no more than 12 people and see how the Bible can inspire us and the ministry we do committed to the kingdom work in different places. We want to create space to help tend to the ministry leaders soul care where they can be served/have the text washed over them in order to care for those they have been called to love. Our hope is through these small groups we are helping our participants return to “square one” by spending more time reflecting on biblical texts with one another. In these small groups we honor a sacred listening to the text, silence, journaling, and a conversation that stems from this reflective approach to time with the text. It is beautiful to experience the movement of the Holy Spirit as we gather around the text. Though you will certainly learn something about the text, we want to provide space for experiencing the text less as information and more for formation. What Peterson was diagnosing in 2011 is no different than in 2026- people don’t know it, or at least not well enough. In the introduction Peterson said he had a revelation in those years that completely shifted how he preached sermons and pastored his congregation. The words he preached from the pulpit needed congruence with how he and his congregation lived their lives throughout the week- between what we do and what we say. In the compilation of these 49 sermons in, "As Kingfishers Catch Fire: A Conversation on the Ways of God Formed by the Words of God," Peterson highlights 7 different Biblical voices who might help with this congruence problem. Being in their company can widen our eyes and spirits to what the Lord is at work doing even now. We are choosing to reflect on the Scripture lessons from the section on Peter. Though the texts below will place us in the context of Peter, Peter is not the main point. Preaching in the company of Peter is a proclamation that comes from walking with Jesus. Peterson calls this "incarnational storytelling." Simply, this is the stuff of their lives that they saw take place before their eyes. Not the one we have dreamed up or narrowed to one particular text or even a good movie clip, but who is the young boy shepherd to bewildered king of Israel who lived a real life attempting to be faithful to the God who called him? Given the amount of material we have from and about David in Scripture we have the chance to sit with a large scope of his life.
